The second worst enemy is accumulated water. The preventive measure for this should be taken at the very moment the hardwood flooring is being laid. Make sure that there is no undulation, because this can result in water accumulation. Seepage can warp the floor. Never wait to remove spills and stains. Wipe off these to let your hardwood flooring last long with the original sheen. When cleaning the floor use mild cleaners and avoid oil based soaps. These actually interfere with the surface finish; make it oily and when you need to recoat the surface you will have to grind the surface to let the coat take its grip.
Be careful with your furniture. When you move your furniture around, make sure you lift them and not drag them across the floor. This may scratch the floor. If these are heavy, use felt padding under them to slide them from one place to another. Your objective is to avoid unwanted dents on the surface. Also make sure that harsh sunlight does not fall continuously on any part of the floor. It may fade the surface sheen. Use curtains to keep away direct sunlight.
